Single editions of each of the 42 records in
A Simple Procedure are available on a first-come / first-serve basis starting. Please note that these were cut by hand using a Presto 6N lathe from the 1940s, so certain records had to be cut really quietly to avoid damaging the cutting head with large amounts of bass or drastic changes in dynamics. It can also take some finagling to get the right settings to achieve optimal playback and avoid skipping. You will probably need to play with the weight and anti-skate settings. You want less weight than a typical record — the needle should glide along the surface rather than digging in. If you’re using a Technics 1200, we would recommend setting the weight at around 2 grams and the anti-skating to 1 as a starting point and then adjusting from there. In any case, there will be a fair amount of surface noise, but we think that's actually part of their charm. As mentioned in the press release:
“The resulting records, transcribed using an antiquated technology whose makers could certainly never have foreseen such a (mis)use, speak honestly to the nature of their translation into the physical world, lying buried under layers of static in a way that harkens towards impossible histories or unlikely uses of time travel.”
